We’ve just had a fantastic lecture on “Mine Rescue,” organized last Friday at UJW by the Miners and Geologists Research Club. Mining students and club members Martyna Kaczmarek and Justyna Żołnierczyk were responsible for organizing the event. The students were supported by Anna Wojciechowicz, BEng, PhD, Dean of the Lubin Branch Campus and the club’s advisor. The event began with a welcome address to the guests and the students gathered in the auditorium. In addition to the speakers, the event was attended by Marcin Danis, Technical Director of the “Polkowice-Sieroszowice” Branch, and the host of the University, Rector Prof. Tadeusz Kierzyk. The speakers included:
- Sebastian Rakowiecki, Technical Director of the Mining and Metallurgical Rescue Unit at KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.,
- Mariusz Rosik, Manager of the Mine Rescue Station at the Polkowice-Sieroszowice Mining Operations Division.
The students had the opportunity to learn about the symbolism associated with mine rescue, the structure of mine rescue operations both in Poland and specifically at KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., the principles of cooperation and coordination among rescue services at the scene of an accident, the levels of command during a rescue operation, methods for assessing emergency preparedness, procedures to follow during a rescue operation, cooperation between rescue units, and the command and management of the Mine Rescue and Rescue Group (JRGH). The speakers also discussed the International Rescue Competitions, in which KGHM Polska Miedź rescuers are unbeatable; the mental resilience essential for the work of a rescuer; the stress and challenges associated with this demanding profession; the beautiful moments when, many hours after an accident, they reached survivors, as well as the sad moments when the scale of the accident was so immense that they were unable to reach the victim. Active rescue workers Łukasz Dominów and Marcin Domański provided a practical dose of knowledge; in a vivid and humorous way, they demonstrated the principles of pre-medical first aid to the meeting’s participants. Marcin shared with the audience the story of his own accident, which left him bedridden in the hospital and in a coma for a full seven long days. Despite these traumatic experiences, Marcin returned to his work as a rescuer and continues to save the lives of others, which speaks to the tremendous strength of character that must characterize all rescuers, especially those working in such challenging conditions as deep mines. During the meeting, attendees also had the opportunity to watch videos produced by KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. about mine rescue, rescue operations, training, and the lives of rescuers while on duty at the rescue station. It was a very informative and moving event, not only for our students but also for their children, who participated with great interest.
